Do You Love Your Job?
By Keith Zimcosky

February is known as the month of love. So we at Interview Connections are asking you, do you love your job? If the answer is yes, congratulations! However, many people are stuck in jobs they do not love or even like. If that is you, than this article is for you!

Many people work for companies or keep positions they don’t like for many reasons. For some they may be waiting for a promotion, they hate their place of work but like their co-workers, they have been there many years and feel the company owes them some sort of reward, or they may have just started and don’t want to leave for fear of being a job hopper.

If you are working for a company or if you are in a position you don’t like, you need to ask yourself these questions:

  1. Do I feel a sense of self-accomplishment in the current job role I am in?
  2. Is there opportunity for me to grow within my current company?
  3. Is this job having a negative impact on my marriage or personal relationships?
  4. Am I spending less time with my children because of the company I work for?
  5. Do I leave work overly stressed?
  6. When I get home, am I exhausted and all I do is sleep?
  7. Am I not doing the things I once enjoyed because I worry about work?
  8. Have I gained weight working for my present employer?
  9. When I speak about my company/job, do I only focus on the negative aspects?
  10. Do I dread waking up and going to work the next day?
  11. Am I losing sleep because I wake up in the middle of the night not wanting to go to work?
  12. Does my boss respect me and my other co-workers?
  13. Am I compensated fairly? (This includes benefits, 401K, bonuses, etc…)

If you have answered any of these questions negatively, you really need to search within yourself and ask, why do I continue working for the company I work for? Quitting a job is a terrifying situation for some and unfortunately many people stay with companies that treat them unfairly for fear of quitting.

If you remember anything out of this article, know that nobody is forced to work for any organization that treats them poorly. There is always a better opportunity out there!! We all make mistakes and end up working for the wrong company at some point. Learn from it and get out! Just be sure you do extra research on the next company you go to work for!

To make yourself feel better about your situation, update your cover letter and resume. Once updated, start sending them out to potential employers. Begin interviewing, even if you are not seriously looking, this will help you build confidence. Working for companies who negatively beat down there employees destroys confidence within oneself. Interviewing rebuilds that confidence because now others are interested in you and the talents you possess.

There is a shining light at the other side of the tunnel. You may be in a dark place now but know there is a better opportunity out there. You just need to take the initiative and find that better opportunity!

“Nobody should feel they need to stay with any organization that does not respect their employee needs and treats their employee’s poorly.”
